Nyong Stages Dramatic Comeback to Win Commonwealth Games Silver

Nigerian weightlifter Ruth Nyong delivered a spirited performance to win a silver medal in the women’s 48kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday.

Nyong began strongly in the snatch event, lifting 71kg on her opening attempt before setting a personal best of 75kg to finish third in that phase of the competition.

Her medal hopes were threatened when she failed her first two clean and jerk attempts at 93kg, leaving her on the verge of elimination. Under intense pressure, the Nigerian athlete successfully completed the lift on her final attempt, securing a place on the podium.

She finished with a combined total of 168kg, earning the silver medal behind India’s Mirabai Chanu, who retained her Commonwealth Games title. Malaysia’s Irene Henry took home the bronze medal.

Chanu’s victory marked her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal, having previously won the event in 2018 and 2022. The Indian star, who also won an Olympic silver medal at Tokyo 2020, gave another dominant display to claim India’s first gold medal of the Glasgow Games.

Nigeria has continued to impress in weightlifting and para-powerlifting, with the country now boasting three gold medals and four silver medals from the events so far.
