Glasgow 2026: Nigeria’s Medal Hopefuls Boost Athletics Squad

Nigeria’s athletics team has been strengthened ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games with the arrival of medal contenders Temitope Adeshina and Ella Onojuvwevwo in Glasgow.

Adeshina, Nigeria’s women’s high jump record holder, will compete in her second Commonwealth Games after making her debut in Birmingham in 2022.

The 27-year-old had faced uncertainty over her participation due to travel challenges, but she arrived in Scotland on Saturday and is expected to compete.

She heads into the Games in outstanding form after an unbeaten NCAA season in which she won both indoor and outdoor titles.

With a season-best jump of 1.97 metres, Adeshina is considered one of Nigeria’s strongest medal prospects.

Nigeria’s athletics campaign begins on Monday with Favour Ashe and Fakorede Adekalu competing in the men’s 100m heats as they seek places in the semi-finals.

Other Nigerian athletes scheduled to compete include Miracle Ezechukwu in the women’s 100m heats, Sade Olatoye in the women’s hammer throw, and Eucharia Iyiazi in the women’s F57 para shot put event.
