Super Falcons Hit by Racist Online Abuse Before WAFCON Campaign

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have come under racist attacks on social media ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Several players were targeted with offensive messages containing monkey and banana emojis following recent controversies surrounding the team.

The abuse surfaced as the defending champions prepared for their Group C opener against Malawi.

The backlash intensified after forward Esther Okoronkwo alleged that cash was stolen from players’ rooms at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca.

She claimed to have lost about $700, while other teammates also reportedly lost money.
Following the allegations, abusive comments flooded the players’ social media pages, with many posts containing racist imagery commonly used to target Black athletes.

Former Super Eagles media officer Colin Udoh later disclosed that a suspect had been arrested in connection with the alleged theft and had reportedly confessed.

He added that the affected players would be compensated while authorities continue their investigation.

The latest incident is similar to an earlier case involving Super Falcons forward Rinsola Babajide, who was subjected to racist messages after commenting on a CAF-related controversy involving Morocco.

The Super Falcons are seeking another continental triumph after defeating hosts Morocco 3-2 in the previous WAFCON final to secure their record-extending 10th African title.
