Protests Spread Across Tripoli as Anger Mounts Over Power Outages

Widespread protests have erupted across Libya’s capital, Tripoli, as residents express growing frustration over prolonged electricity cuts and rising power costs.

Demonstrators blocked major roads, shut down public buildings and launched a civil disobedience campaign that has spread to several districts.

On Sunday, protesters closed parts of the coastal road in Janzour and gathered outside the West Tripoli power station to protest daily blackouts that have lasted for hours. Videos circulating online showed demonstrators burning tyres and blocking roads across the city.

Protesters also targeted government facilities, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and offices of the state-owned telecommunications company Libyana.

Many carried banners criticising Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah and his Government of National Unity.

The campaign, led by the Souq Al-Jumaa Movement, says it aims to pressure the government over alleged corruption and worsening public services.

The group has called for the dissolution of Libya’s current political institutions and greater accountability from public officials.

The unrest has spread beyond Tripoli to nearby Tajoura, where local youth groups announced a boycott of state institutions.

Organisers said the action was driven by deteriorating electricity, water, health and education services, as well as ongoing fuel shortages, cash shortages and a lack of medicines.

The government has not yet responded publicly to the protests.

Meanwhile, daily power cuts in Tripoli and other regions have reached up to 10 hours, fuelling public anger and adding to concerns over Libya’s prolonged political and economic challenges.
