Hunger, Insecurity Threaten Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election Bid-Dalung

Former Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, has said President Bola Tinubu is “working very hard” to lose the 2027 presidential election, warning that rising economic hardship and insecurity could undermine the administration’s chances of securing a second term.

Dalung, who served in the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, made the remarks in a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday.

According to him, incumbent governments often lose elections not because the opposition becomes stronger, but because they become increasingly disconnected from the people they govern.

He said any administration seeking re-election must continuously build public trust by implementing policies that ease hardship, improve security, fulfil campaign promises and demonstrate compassion towards citizens.

The former minister argued that many Nigerians were grappling with soaring living costs, unemployment and insecurity, warning that these realities could significantly influence voting patterns in the 2027 general election.

Dalung maintained that elections effectively begin long before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) releases an election timetable, insisting that every painful experience endured by citizens and every unfulfilled promise translates into growing electoral dissatisfaction.

He further stated that hunger, economic hardship and hopelessness were more powerful political forces than opposition campaigns, stressing that the daily realities faced by Nigerians would carry more weight than political rhetoric.

Dalung also cautioned the Tinubu administration against interpreting political endorsements and defections as evidence of widespread public approval, saying Nigerians would ultimately judge the government by the impact of its policies on their lives.

He urged the administration to devote greater attention to addressing the country’s economic and security challenges rather than political realignments if it intends to retain power in 2027.

“When I say President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is working very hard to lose the 2027 election, I am not making a political wish. I am making a political assessment.

“Incumbents do not lose elections because the opposition suddenly becomes stronger. They lose because they gradually become disconnected from the people they govern.

“Every government seeking another mandate must continually deposit political goodwill into the emotional account of the electorate. Every policy that eases hardship is a deposit. Every life secured is a deposit. Every promise kept is a deposit. Every act of compassion is a deposit.

“But what happens when, day after day, the withdrawals become greater than the deposits?

“That is the question confronting this administration.

“Today, millions of Nigerians are not asking for luxury; they are asking for survival.”
