Nearly 17 Million Nigerians Could Face Hunger by January 2027 – Report

A new report by the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) has projected that nearly 17 million Nigerians could face acute food insecurity by January 2027, highlighting the country’s growing hunger crisis.

According to the report, between 16 million and 16.99 million Nigerians will require urgent food assistance by January 2027.

Although this is lower than the estimated 20 million people currently facing hunger in July 2026, the figure remains higher than levels recorded in previous years and above the country’s five-year average.

The report ranked Nigeria among the countries with the highest number of people facing severe hunger, placing it behind Sudan, Pakistan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It also identified Nigeria as one of four countries expected to account for more than 10 per cent of the global population needing emergency food assistance.

FEWS NET attributed the crisis mainly to insecurity, economic hardship, and climate-related challenges.

Ongoing conflicts in parts of northern Nigeria have disrupted farming activities, reduced household incomes, and limited access to food supplies.

The organisation warned that food prices are likely to remain high even after the main harvest season due to continued production and supply disruptions.

Communities in conflict-affected areas of the North-East are expected to remain among the hardest hit.

Globally, FEWS NET estimates that between 145 million and 155 million people across 30 monitored countries will need urgent food assistance by January 2027.

The report stressed the need for governments and humanitarian organisations to strengthen efforts to address food insecurity and support vulnerable populations.

Experts say improving security, boosting agricultural production, and addressing economic challenges will be critical to reducing hunger and preventing the crisis from worsening in Nigeria.
