Flooding and Poor Sanitation Put Lagos at Risk of Disease Outbreaks

Health experts have warned that persistent flooding and poor waste management in Lagos could trigger outbreaks of cholera, typhoid, dysentery, and other waterborne diseases.

They explained that floodwaters often become contaminated with sewage and refuse, increasing the risk of infection. Stagnant water left behind by floods also creates breeding grounds for mosquitoes, raising concerns about malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases.

Several parts of Lagos have been identified as flood-prone areas, with recent heavy rainfall causing widespread disruption, displacing residents, and affecting access to essential services.

Public health specialists said blocked drainage systems, indiscriminate waste disposal, and overflowing refuse dumps are worsening the situation by allowing contaminated water to spread more easily through communities.

They urged residents to maintain proper hygiene, drink safe water, and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms of waterborne diseases.

The experts also called on the government to improve waste management, strengthen drainage infrastructure, and intensify environmental sanitation efforts to prevent potential outbreaks.
