A fire outbreak has destroyed 17 shops at Sabo Market in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the fire started around 1:10 a.m. on Tuesday and was contained before it could spread to other sections of the market.

Preliminary investigations suggest that an electrical surge may have triggered the blaze.

Emergency responders from LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service swiftly brought the fire under control, preventing greater destruction.

A post-incident assessment showed that 17 of the 32 shops in the affected section were damaged, while groceries, food items, and other merchandise were lost.

No deaths or injuries were recorded. LASEMA has urged traders and residents to observe electrical safety measures, including proper wiring and regular inspection of electrical installations, to reduce the risk of future fire incidents.
