Nigeria, UK Deepen Partnership to Tackle Terrorism and Cybercrime

Nigeria and the United Kingdom have agreed to strengthen their security and defence cooperation, focusing on counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, maritime security, intelligence sharing, and the fight against fraud and illicit financial activities.

The agreement was reached during the Fourth UK–Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership Dialogue in Abuja, co-chaired by Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and his UK counterpart, Jonathan Powell.

According to a joint communiqué, the UK reaffirmed its support for Nigeria’s Armed Forces through training, technical assistance, and joint programmes aimed at addressing emerging security threats.

Both countries also agreed to enhance maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea to combat illegal activities and safeguard regional trade routes.

The two nations pledged to intensify efforts against terrorism and violent extremism through stronger intelligence sharing, improved investigations, and better coordination among security agencies.

The UK also promised continued support for aviation security at Lagos and Abuja airports and backed Nigeria’s anti-kidnapping initiatives.

Both countries expressed concern over the worsening security situation in the Sahel region and reaffirmed Nigeria’s leadership role in promoting peace and stability across West Africa.

They agreed to monitor progress on the new commitments ahead of the next Security and Defence Partnership Dialogue, which will be hosted by the United Kingdom in 2027.
