Former DSS Officer Claims Abacha Died of Heart Attack During Intimate Encounter

A former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dennis Amachree, has alleged that Nigeria’s former military ruler, Gen. Sani Abacha, died from a heart attack during an intimate encounter, not from poisoning as widely speculated.

Amachree made the claim in his memoir, DSS @40: My Journey Behind the Shield, where he recounted events surrounding Abacha’s death on June 8, 1998.

According to him, the late Head of State suffered a fatal cardiac arrest at the Presidential Villa in Abuja in the early hours of the morning.

The retired intelligence officer, who served as Assistant Director of Operations and Intelligence at the Lagos DSS Command at the time, said a woman who was with Abacha during the incident panicked after discovering he was unresponsive and left the villa before security officials became aware of the situation.

Amachree claimed the woman later travelled to Lagos, prompting DSS headquarters to direct him to locate and question her.

Recalling the interview, he said she insisted she had nothing to do with Abacha’s death and explained that he suddenly became unresponsive during their encounter.

According to Amachree, her account supports his belief that Abacha died from a heart attack triggered during sexual activity, dismissing long-standing conspiracy theories that have surrounded the former military leader’s sudden death.

Abacha ruled Nigeria from November 1993 until his death in June 1998. Nearly three decades later, the circumstances surrounding his death remain one of the most debated episodes in Nigeria’s political history.
