Bandits Invade Kogi School, Abduct Students, Principal During NECO Exam

Armed men suspected to be bandits on Tuesday attacked Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, abducting four students, the school principal and a National Examinations Council (NECO) ad hoc staff member while candidates were writing the ongoing NECO examination.

The attackers reportedly stormed the school at about 5:25pm, causing panic among students and staff as the examination was in progress.

Following the attack, security operatives comprising the police and other agencies launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation to track down the kidnappers and secure the release of the victims.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, said one of the abducted students had been rescued during the ongoing operation.

She stated that efforts had been intensified to rescue the remaining victims unharmed and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Afusat disclosed that the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, had mobilised to the affected community alongside the Brigade Commander and the Kogi State Security Adviser to the Governor, Commodore Jerry Omodara (Rtd), for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.

She said security agencies were working together to restore calm in the area and ensure the safe return of the remaining abductees.

According to the police spokesperson, the Command has commenced a comprehensive search-and-rescue operation, with tactical teams deployed to locate the kidnappers.

She assured residents that the police would continue to provide verified updates as the operation progresses.

The attack is the latest in a series of kidnappings targeting schools in parts of the country, despite repeated assurances by authorities that measures are being strengthened to improve security around educational institutions.
