A rapidly strengthening El Niño weather pattern could trigger devastating floods, disease outbreaks, and food shortages across vulnerable communities in East Africa and Asia, humanitarian groups have warned.
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) said countries including Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are among those facing the greatest risks, with many already dealing with conflicts and humanitarian crises.
The US Climate Prediction Center said El Niño has a high chance of becoming one of the strongest events recorded since 1950, with its peak expected between October and December.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) also confirmed that El Niño conditions have developed and are expected to intensify in the coming months.
Experts say the weather phenomenon, caused by warming Pacific Ocean temperatures, can disrupt global rainfall patterns, bringing heavy rains and floods to some areas while causing drought in others.
Somalia has already experienced repeated flooding, while Kenya is preparing for increased rainfall later in the year. In Bangladesh, flooding and landslides have killed refugees and displaced thousands of people.
Aid organisations warn that worsening weather conditions could deepen food insecurity, especially in regions already affected by poverty, conflict, and reduced humanitarian funding.
They are calling for urgent support to help communities prepare before the crisis worsens
