A man identified as Ofofon and his girlfriend have been arrested by the police in Cross River State over the alleged murder of a young woman whose body was reportedly dismembered and sold.

The suspects were arrested on Tuesday following the incident at Afokang by Jebbs Street in Calabar South.

Residents alleged that the female suspect, who works at a chemist store, invited one of her friends to spend the night at the couple’s residence on Monday.

According to a resident, Theresa, the victim was allegedly killed during the night, after which her body was cut into parts and allegedly taken away for sale.

She told Vanguard that the suspects had hoped rainfall would wash away traces of blood from the scene, but their plan reportedly failed when the rain stopped.

“The man’s girlfriend invited her friend to stay the night. During the night, they allegedly killed and dismembered her. They expected the rain to wash away the blood, but it did not continue. By morning, blood was seen flowing through a drainage pipe connected to the apartment, raising suspicion among neighbours who alerted the police,” she said.

Theresa further alleged that one of the suspect’s minibuses arrived at the residence around 2 a.m. and later returned him after he had reportedly gone out to dispose of the body parts.

“He owns three minibuses. One of them came to pick him up at about 2 a.m. and brought him back later that night,” she claimed.

The resident also said the female suspect told investigators that she was locked inside a room by her boyfriend before the killing occurred, although the claim could not be independently verified.

She added that the male suspect has three children from a previous marriage and alleged that his former wife left him years ago.

Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer in Cross River State, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the couple was taken into custody over suspected murder.

He added that investigations into the case are ongoing.
