The drugs were discovered hidden inside imported vehicles in a container falsely declared as carrying used cars from Canada

The Tin-Can Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a large shipment of cannabis valued at N18.96 billion at a Lagos port.

The drugs were discovered hidden inside imported vehicles in a container falsely declared as carrying used cars from Canada.

Customs Area Controller, Frank Onyeka, said the seizure followed intelligence received by officers, prompting a full inspection of the container.

He explained that 185 jumbo bags of cannabis were found concealed inside a 2010 Toyota Camry and a 2023 Chevrolet.

A total of 9,450 packages weighing 4,729 kilograms were recovered during the operation.

Onyeka described the interception as a major breakthrough, attributing it to improved intelligence gathering and cooperation with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

He noted that the operation aligns with a recent collaboration agreement between both agencies to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking and other transnational crimes.

The seized substances have since been handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution.

Onyeka warned that the Customs Service, in partnership with other security agencies, remains committed to detecting and dismantling smuggling networks.
