Lebanon’s Prime Minister has accused Israel of committing a “heinous crime” by targeting and killing civil defence emergency workers.

Three of the rescuers were among five people killed in a double Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon.

According to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health, two consecutive Israeli strikes hit a building in the town of Majdal Zoun on Tuesday.

The first strike caused casualties, and the second struck as rescue workers arrived to assist the injured, killing three of them.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said in a social media post that targeting civil defence personnel while they were carrying out humanitarian duties amounts to a war crime.

“This is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law,” he said.

Salam added that the government would work through international channels to condemn the attack and push for an end to what he described as ongoing violations of the ceasefire agreement.

A spokesperson for the Lebanese Civil Defence told Reuters that the three rescuers were trapped under rubble after the second strike and were later confirmed dead.

The Lebanese army also reported that two of its soldiers were wounded in the second strike, which targeted military personnel, rescue workers, and civilian bulldozers.

Media reports indicate that Israeli forces struck a Lebanese army patrol that was escorting civil defence teams responding to the initial attack.
