An Israeli airstrike has killed at least 10 people and injured several others near a school sheltering displaced Palestinians in central Gaza, according to health officials.
The attack on Monday came amid clashes between Palestinians and members of an Israeli-backed militia, which had reportedly stormed the school in an attempt to abduct some individuals, medics and residents said.
In a statement, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital said at least 10 people were killed and dozens wounded, including six in critical condition, following shelling and fighting east of the Maghazi refugee camp.
Witnesses said Israeli drones fired two missiles during the clashes, causing the deaths and injuries.
“Residents tried to defend their homes, but the occupation forces targeted them directly,” said Ahmed al-Maghazi in comments to Reuters.
A leader of the Israeli-backed militia later claimed in a video that five Hamas members were killed.
The claim could not be independently verified, and there was no immediate response from Hamas.
