The statements made by presidential spokeswoman Bayo Onanuga, which connected Obi to the impending demonstration, prompted a response from Obi’s media staff.

The Bola Tinubu administration is allegedly planning to arrest Peter Obi in connection with the next August 1 nationwide demonstration, according to the former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate’s media team.

The presidential spokeswoman Bayo Onanuga’s statements, which connected Obi to the impending protest, prompted a response from Obi’s media staff.

Previous reports claimed that Nigerians should not stage a civilian coup against Tinubu due to the Tinubu presidency’s concerns about the impending statewide demonstration.

Onanuga had claimed that those who supported Obi were planning rallies across the country against the Tinubu administration and that they ought to be held responsible for any mayhem that ensued.

In addition, he had charged that the 2020 ENDSARS demonstration was violently orchestrated by the protest organisers.

The claims were characterised as baseless and spiteful by Obi’s media office in response, implying that the president is trying to use the situation as an excuse to detain Obi and limit his freedom of association.

The following was said in a statement released on Saturday by its spokesperson, Yunusa Tanko: “The allegations made by one of the Presidency Spokespersons, Bayo Onanuga, that Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party for 2023, is the mastermind behind a planned protest in the country are ludicrous, wicked, and unfounded have caught the attention of Peter Obi Media Reach, POMR.

The message went so far as to say that Obi need to answer for any chaos that might break out during the demonstration. POMR, however, can report with good and trustworthy authority that these unfounded claims are part of a plot to detain Obi, restrict his freedom of association and movement, and halt his advocacy for good governance, which they believe will harm their opulent lifestyle.

“Peter Obi has never demonstrated or been connected to violence in any way, not even in the most blatant provocations, both during and after his tenure in public office. Even during the electioneering, he has consistently demonstrated his issue-drivenness by continuing without mentioning names.

“POMR is also aware that a number of attack dogs have been hired and placed in strategic locations to make sure Obi doesn’t have the support of Nigerians who are eager to hear his opinions on issues.”
