Iran has executed a man convicted of spying for Israel’s Mossad, state media reported Wednesday.
The official IRNA news agency identified him as Ali Ardestani, saying he provided sensitive information to Mossad agents in exchange for financial rewards in cryptocurrency.
According to the report, Ardestani confessed to the charges and had hoped to receive a million-dollar payment as well as a British visa. IRNA described him as a “special operative force of Israel” who supplied images and footage of “sensitive locations” to Mossad.
The agency did not provide details about the time or place of his arrest. It added that Ardestani was recruited online by Israel and that his case underwent legal proceedings in both lower courts and the country’s Supreme Court.
Human rights groups and Western governments have condemned Iran’s growing use of the death penalty, particularly for political and espionage-related offenses.
Activists say many convictions rely on coerced confessions and that trials are often held behind closed doors, without access to independent legal counsel.
Tehran, however, maintains that those executed were “agents of hostile intelligence services” involved in terrorism or sabotage. Iranian officials have accused Israel of carrying out covert attacks inside Iran, including the assassinations of nuclear scientists and cyberattacks on strategic facilities.
Since a June air campaign by Israel that killed nearly 1,100 people in Iran—including senior military commanders and nuclear scientists—Tehran has executed 12 individuals for espionage. In retaliation, Iran’s missile strikes
killed 28 people in Israel.
The tit-for-tat attacks have left both countries on high alert and further heightened tensions across the region.
