Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has urged U.S. President Donald Trump to stop making threats about taking over Greenland after he renewed such remarks following Washington’s abduction of Venezuela’s leader.
“It makes absolutely no sense to suggest that the United States needs to take over Greenland. The U.S. has no right to annex any of the three countries in the Danish Kingdom,” Frederiksen said in a statement on Sunday.
The remarks followed an interview published by The Atlantic, in which Trump said, “We do need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defence.”
On Saturday, the United States bombed Venezuela and removed President Nicolás Maduro from power, prompting concerns in Denmark that a similar scenario could be pursued with Greenland, a Danish territory.
“I would therefore strongly urge the United States to stop making threats against a historically close ally, and against another country and another people who have made it very clear that they are not for sale,” Frederiksen said.
The office of Greenland’s prime minister did not immediately comment on Trump’s latest statements.
Trump has repeatedly called for Greenland a self-governing Danish territory and NATO member to become part of the United States.
Last month, the Trump administration appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, a public supporter of annexation, as special envoy to the mineral-rich Arctic island.
Greenland’s strategic location between Europe and North America makes it a key site for the U.S. ballistic missile defence system, while its mineral resources are also attractive as Washington seeks to reduce its reliance on Chinese exports.
