The explosion occurred at around 11:46 a.m. after a woman reportedly discovered the explosive device in her apartment and asked Mohammed to help identify it.

A routine cleaning exercise turned tragic on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, when a hand grenade detonated in a residential compound along Abacha Road, Maraba, Nasarawa State, injuring a female soldier, Mohammed, and two children.

The explosion occurred at around 11:46 a.m. after a woman reportedly discovered the explosive device in her apartment and asked Mohammed to help identify it.

Preliminary investigations revealed the grenade had been left in the apartment about three years ago by an unidentified soldier who had served in the North-East, according to an incident report obtained by The PUNCH.

The soldier’s sister, who resides in the same compound, reportedly found the grenade while cleaning her room.

Unaware of its danger, she brought it outside and asked Mohammed whether it was useful or should be discarded.

The device exploded immediately, severely injuring Mohammed’s left wrist and other parts of her body, as well as causing serious injuries to the two children.

Mohammed was first taken to Nagari Allah Private Hospital in Keffi before being transferred to the Defence Headquarters Medical Centre at Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja, and later referred to Cedarcrest Hospital, Apo, where she is currently receiving treatment.

The report added that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances behind the incident.
