Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has launched a fresh attack on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, claiming he made his first $1 million at the age of 29, when Wike was “likely just out of law school.”
Makinde spoke on Tuesday during a media interaction in Ibadan while justifying his decision to part ways politically with Wike and reject support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
He said his financial breakthrough followed the award of a $1 million contract by Mobil, describing it as a landmark achievement in his business journey, achieved years before Wike began his career in law.
Addressing the rift between them, the governor said the strain became obvious during a meeting that included Wike, President Tinubu, the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and other top officials.
Makinde disclosed that Wike told the President he would “hold the PDP” for him ahead of the 2027 elections, a remark he said stunned him.
“The President never asked him to do that; he offered it himself. Wike is free to back Tinubu, but those of us who believe in multiparty democracy and want to defend the PDP should also be free to make our own decisions,” Makinde said.
He said attempts to resolve the issue with Wike afterwards failed, leaving him with no option but to take a clear stand.
“From that moment, I made it clear I would not be part of it. Wike has the right to support whoever he wants, just as I have the right to choose who I will support and what role I will play in 2027,” he added.
