Police said Naveed Akram faces a total of 59 charges, including 40 counts of causing injury or grievous bodily harm with intent to murder.

The 24-year-old man accused of opening fire alongside his father at a Jewish gathering at Australia’s Bondi Beach has been charged with a terrorist act, 15 counts of murder, and dozens of other offenses, New South Wales Police said on Wednesday.

Police said Naveed Akram faces a total of 59 charges, including 40 counts of causing injury or grievous bodily harm with intent to murder.

Akram, who remains under police guard in a hospital, was expected to appear in court on Wednesday via video link, police said.

Authorities allege that he opened fire alongside his father, 50-year-old Sajid Akram, at a beachside event on Sunday, killing 15 people and injuring 41 others. Police said Akram’s father, who was also accused of shooting at the group, was shot and killed by officers at the scene.

The New South Wales Joint Counter Terrorism Team is leading the investigation after Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon declared the attack to be terror-related.

“Police will allege in court that the man engaged in actions that caused death and serious injury, endangered lives, and were carried out to advance a religious cause and instill fear in the community,” investigators said when announcing the charges.

“Early indications suggest the attack was terrorist in nature and inspired by ISIS, a terrorist organisation banned in Australia.”

According to police, Akram has been charged with committing a terrorist act, 15 counts of murder, 40 counts of causing wounding or grievous bodily harm with intent to murder, discharging a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, publicly displaying the symbol of a prohibited terrorist organization, and placing an explosive in or near a building with intent to cause harm.
