Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death in a case involving alleged crimes against humanity.

The court found Hasina guilty on three counts, concluding a months‑long trial that determined she ordered a deadly crackdown on a student‑led uprising last year, which resulted in the fall of her Awami League government.

The three‑member tribunal, headed by Justice Mohd Golam Mortuza Majumder, also issued a judgment against Hasina’s two aides—former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al‑Mamun—on the same charges.

The court stated that the three accused conspired with each other to commit atrocities aimed at killing protesters across the country.

Nevertheless, it pardoned the former police chief, who “sought an apology from the tribunal and the people of the country.” Hasina and Kamal were declared fugitives and tried in absentia, while Mamun initially stood trial in person before becoming an approver.

Security has been increased across the country as the verdict approaches.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali announced on Sunday evening that officers may shoot on sight anyone committing arson, explosions, or trying to harm police or civilians.

The now‑disbanded Awami League had announced a two‑day shutdown before the judgment. Army units, Border Guard Bangladesh forces, and riot police have been stationed around the ICT‑BD complex, and streets in the capital are mostly empty because of fears of violence.
