President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have just wrapped up their first face-to-face talks in six years, aiming to put an end to the prolonged trade war between their nations.
The meeting, held at an air base in Busan, South Korea, lasted around 1 hour and 45 minutes, shorter than Trump’s initial expectation of three to four hours.
Interestingly, the meeting came shortly after Trump announced the US would “immediately” begin testing nuclear weapons, a move that hasn’t been seen in over 30 years. Despite this, the two leaders seemed to part ways on good terms, exchanging brief words and shaking hands.
With the meeting concluded, Trump is now headed back to Washington.
There was no immediate statement released after the high-profile talks. Before the meeting, the two leaders shook hands for the cameras and, in brief comments, expressed optimism about the U.S.-China relationship.
President Xi Jinping is reportedly seeking a shift in US support for Taiwan, the democratically governed island claimed by Beijing, during his meeting with President Donald Trump.
However, Trump downplayed the issue, stating he’s unsure if Taiwan will even be discussed. Taiwan relies heavily on the US for political and military backing.
Meanwhile, Trump is also pushing Xi to leverage his influence over Russian President Vladimir Putin to help end the war in Ukraine and cease buying Russian energy.
