Six National Youth Service Corps members have filed a N1 billion lawsuit against the Anambra State Government following alleged assault and unlawful detention by operatives of the state vigilante group, Agunechemba.
The plaintiffs Jennifer Elohor, Greatness Oyeh, Eze Ikenna, Anighoro Godspower, Feyisara Amore, and Chimenum Wonodi — approached the Federal High Court in Awka, seeking redress for the physical, mental, emotional, and psychological trauma they reportedly endured.
The assault, captured in a viral video, showed the vigilantes storming the corps members’ lodge, beating Elohor, and stripping her naked. The attackers allegedly accused the NYSC members of being internet fraudsters (“yahoo boys”) despite their attempts to identify themselves with official NYSC cards.
Filed through their lawyer, Cyrus Onu, the suit names the Anambra State Government, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the State Attorney-General, and the vigilante group as respondents.
In addition to the N1 billion compensation, the corps members are requesting the court to declare their arrest, detention, and torture illegal, unconstitutional, and a violation of their fundamental rights. They are also seeking an order for a public apology to be published in at least two national newspapers and one local Anambra State paper.
