Former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has said it would be impossible for opposition parties to merge ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at an All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, Fashola noted that only the ruling party has successfully carried out a merger that unseated the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He said those who opposed the APC at its formation are now attempting to form a coalition, but are realising the challenges involved.
“Those who stood in opposition against our emergence are now trying to form a coalition, and they are seeing how difficult it is to form a merger that produces APC,” Fashola said.
“History will tell you that is the only merger that has occurred in Nigeria’s political history. They said it couldn’t happen, but it did. The opposition can’t do theirs.”
Fashola added that while APC members are already positioning themselves ahead of the elections, official campaigns have not yet begun, as electoral law dictates the start of campaigns.
“I know that people are already warming up, but the campaign has not started yet. Our party is organising because we are progressives,” he said.
He explained the party’s progressive stance, saying, “If they ask you why we said we are progressive, it’s because we are determined to improve the human condition.”
