President Bola Tinubu is set to appoint a new Chairman for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) this week, following the completion of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s second and final term in office.

According to reports by The PUNCH, Tinubu is expected to present the list of nominees for Yakubu’s replacement at the Council of State meeting scheduled to hold in Abuja on Thursday.

The Council, which includes former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, serving governors, and other prominent Nigerians, is constitutionally mandated to advise the President on major national matters, including the appointment of the INEC Chairman.

Yakubu officially handed over on Tuesday to May Agbamuche-Mbu, a senior national commissioner and legal practitioner, who will serve as acting chairman pending the appointment of a substantive head.

In a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu commended Yakubu for his dedication and his role in deepening Nigeria’s democracy.

“President Tinubu thanked Professor Yakubu for his services to the nation and his efforts to sustain Nigeria’s democracy, particularly through the organisation of free and fair elections throughout his two-term tenure,” Onanuga said.

In appreciation of his service, Tinubu conferred on Yakubu the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

Onanuga added that the President had directed Yakubu to hand over to the most senior national commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will oversee the commission until a new chairman is confirmed.
