Tension gripped Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Monday after a 26-year-old man, identified as Daniel, allegedly beheaded his 15-year-old brother, Emmanuel, for ritual purposes.

Daniel, the son of a senior police officer, was said to have lured his younger brother to the banks of the Origbara River, an isolated part of the community, before committing the heinous act.

An eyewitness, Roland Akinkunmi, told reporters that a passerby raised the alarm after spotting Daniel trying to conceal the severed head in a black bag.

“I was around the palace when I heard people shouting from the Origbara axis. On getting there, I saw Daniel holding a human head. I didn’t know it was his brother’s head at first because I was shocked. Daniel and Emmanuel are from the same parents, and their father is a respected police officer here,” Akinkunmi said.

He added, “We are all in shock. How could someone do this to his own blood? Some people living close to them said the two had earlier engaged in a quarrel, but we believe there is more to it. In this town, anyone who sheds human blood for rituals or any purpose is always exposed.”

Enraged youths in the community reportedly apprehended Daniel and killed him on the spot in retaliation for the gruesome murder.

Confirming the incident, the state police spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, said, “The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, has ordered an immediate investigation. The case has been transferred to the SCID for further and discreet investigation.”
