Cameroon’s President Paul Biya has declared his intention to run for an eighth term in office in the country’s upcoming presidential election scheduled for October 12, 2025.
The 92-year-old, who holds the record as the world’s oldest serving president, made the announcement on Sunday through his official X and Facebook pages, posting in both French and English.
“I’m running for the presidential election on October 12, 2025,” Biya wrote.
“Rest assured that my determination to serve you is matched to the severity of the challenges before us. Together there are no challenges we cannot overcome. The best is still to come.”
If re-elected, Biya could remain in power until nearly age 100, further extending a tenure that began in 1982.
His announcement comes amid persistent speculation about his health and grip on power.
Last year, rumours of his death spread after he disappeared from public view for over a month, prompting widespread concern.
The government responded by banning local media from reporting on his health and issued a statement confirming that he was alive and in good condition, often resting in Geneva.
In June, similar rumours swirled about a possible military coup, but these were not confirmed.
