The body of former President Muhammadu Buhari left London on Tuesday morning aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft en route to Daura, Katsina State, for burial.
In a viral video, the late president’s remains were seen being transported under tight protocol.
Vice President Kashim Shettima is leading a top-level Federal Government delegation to oversee final documentation and logistics for the repatriation of Buhari’s body.
On Monday, the Federal Government announced that President Bola Tinubu will personally receive Buhari’s remains upon arrival in Katsina ahead of the burial in Daura.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who confirmed this at a press briefing in Abuja, said the late president’s remains are expected to arrive in Nigeria by noon on Tuesday.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, will personally receive the remains of the former President in Katsina,” Idris stated.
He added that a brief military ceremony will hold at the airport before the body is moved to Daura for the Jana’iza (funeral prayer) and interment at Buhari’s residence.
As part of national mourning, Tinubu has ordered condolence registers to be opened at all Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies, as well as Nigerian embassies and missions abroad.
Another condolence register is to be opened at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.
Idris noted that world leaders have continued to send condolence messages, describing the tributes as proof of Buhari’s global legacy.
To ensure a dignified burial programme, President Tinubu has set up an Inter-Ministerial Committee chaired by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, to work with the Katsina State Government and Buhari’s family.
Twenty-five members of the Federal Executive Council have also been directed to attend the burial rites in Katsina and remain in Daura for the Third-Day prayers on Wednesday.
