President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a period of national mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday after a prolonged illness.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu confirmed that Buhari died at about 4:30pm in the United Kingdom, where he had been undergoing medical treatment.
Describing the loss as a painful moment for the nation, Tinubu said he had spoken with Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, and extended his condolences to her and the entire family.
As part of the mourning, Tinubu ordered all national flags in Nigeria and at foreign missions to be flown at half-mast in honour of the late leader.
The President also dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima to the UK to accompany Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria.
Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1984 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.
Details of the burial arrangements will be announced by the Presidency in due course.
