ABUJA — The Nigerian Senate has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to authorize a ₦200 million compensation for the family of two-year-old Ivan Onosereba Omhonrina, who was killed by a stray bullet during a failed operation by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Delta State on July 13, 2023.
The resolution followed a motion tabled by Senator Ede Dafinone (APC, Delta Central), who drew attention to the emotional and psychological toll the incident has had on the grieving family.
During Wednesday’s plenary, lawmakers paused for a minute of silence in honor of the deceased toddler and unanimously agreed that the NDLEA should be held accountable for the fatal mishap.
In addition to the proposed compensation, the Senate also called on the NDLEA to cover the cost of overseas medical care for Ivan’s younger brother, Eromonsele, who suffered a serious eye injury during the same raid.
Background of the Incident
The tragic event occurred when NDLEA operatives stormed the Omhonrina family home in Okpanam, Delta State, in pursuit of suspected drug traffickers. During the operation, a stray bullet fatally struck Ivan, while his sibling sustained injuries.
The botched raid drew widespread condemnation from rights activists and the public, who demanded justice and accountability for what was widely described as an avoidable tragedy.
Senate’s Stand
Senator Dafinone described the incident as a “gross failure in operational conduct, training, and respect for human life,” stating that although monetary compensation cannot restore the child’s life, it remains a symbolic act of justice and responsibility.
“No Nigerian child should lose their life under such reckless circumstances,” the Senate declared, calling for enhanced professionalism among security and law enforcement agencies.
The Senate’s recommendation now awaits approval and action from the Presidency.
