Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has dismissed claims of forming an alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 poll.

Speaking during a live session with his supporters on X Space, Obi confirmed his intention to run for President in 2027 and pledged to serve only one term if elected.

“My character and integrity mean more to me than the title of President,” Obi stated.

“If the consensus is for two years, I will serve for two years, and within that time, I will inject competence, capacity and compassion into the heart of governance.”

Obi stressed his commitment to the principle of power rotation between the North and South, noting that President Bola Tinubu would have completed the South’s first four-year tenure by 2027.

He said, “I championed zoning in Anambra. I paid the price. But I remain faithful to that principle.”

Obi ruled out joining any coalition driven by a “desperation for power” rather than the people’s interests, warning against alliances not rooted in service.

He also criticised President Tinubu’s frequent foreign travels, describing them as “wasteful” and disconnected from the nation’s challenges.

Citing Tinubu’s recent trip to St. Lucia, he queried, “What strategic or economic value does a trip to St. Lucia bring to 200 million Nigerians? While our people die daily in Benue and Borno states, our leaders are abroad, cutting ribbons at bus stops.”

According to Obi, Tinubu had made 20 international trips by January 2025, spending 59 days in France alone, without spending a night in any Nigerian state outside Lagos.

“I will not govern from private jets. I will govern from the ground, from the pain, hope and strength of our people,” he said.

When asked about his first 100 days in office, Obi laid out his priorities: addressing insecurity, improving education, healthcare, fighting corruption, reducing poverty, and cutting the cost of governance.

“My family will never touch public funds. Every kobo will go into critical sectors, not pockets.”

He promised to restore democratic values by strengthening the opposition, ending party defections, and ensuring electoral transparency.

“In 2027, our votes will count. The right thing must be done, not after, but before any results are announced in Abuja. We’ll be peaceful, but unyielding.”

On leadership, Obi declared: “If you want to lead, be ready to lay down your life for the people. That is the only true test of leadership.”
