Suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has expressed optimism that peace will finally return to the state following a crucial meeting with President Bola Tinubu and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
The meeting, held on Thursday night at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, was convened to resolve the lingering political crisis rocking Rivers State.
President Tinubu reportedly brought both parties together in a bid to end their long-standing feud and restore unity in the state’s leadership.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Fubara said he believed the state was now on the path to peace and stability.
“For me, it’s very important that this day has come,” Fubara said.
He stressed that development could only happen in a peaceful environment, noting that the outcome of the meeting had created the needed atmosphere for progress.
“What we need for the progress of Rivers State is peace, and by the special grace of God, this night, with the help of Mr. President and the agreement of the leaders of the state, peace has returned to Rivers State,” he said.
The embattled governor also pledged to do everything within his capacity to ensure that the peace achieved would be sustained.
“We will do everything within our power to ensure that we sustain it this time around,” he added.
Earlier, DAILY POST had reported that Tinubu met with both Wike and Fubara, as well as lawmakers from the state, in a move that appeared to mark the end of months of bitter political rivalry between the two power blocs.
Though the details of the agreements reached during the meeting were not made public, sources familiar with the discussion said both men agreed to work together for the good of the state going forward.
The crisis had earlier led to the suspension of Governor Fubara by a faction of the state House of Assembly, with political tension escalating between loyalists of the governor and those of Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
The Thursday night meeting, however, may have signalled a truce, with both leaders now appearing ready to put their differences aside.
