A 22-year-old student from the Arab village of Deir al-Asad in northern Israel has been arrested for allegedly spying for Iran and committing security-related offences.

The suspect, an information systems student at Ben Gurion University in Beersheba, was apprehended in June and is expected to face formal charges, according to a joint statement issued on Thursday by the Shin Bet domestic security agency and the Israeli police.

Authorities disclosed that the student had been in contact with an Iranian agent for several months and carried out tasks under the agent’s instruction in exchange for payment.

Among the alleged acts were an attempt to harm an individual, scattering nails on a major road in Beersheba, and efforts to stir social unrest.

Investigators said the suspect justified his actions as a show of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

It is not yet clear whether his arrest took place before or during the recent 12-day conflict with Iran.

The case adds to a growing list of espionage-related arrests in Israel involving Iranian links.
