Jamiu Abiola, son of the late Chief MKO Abiola, has criticised former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (retd.), for claiming that the late General Sani Abacha was responsible for annulling the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Jamiu, who currently serves as Senior Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Linguistics and Foreign Affairs, dismissed Babangida’s statement as “tales by moonlight”, questioning the sincerity and timing of the remark.

Speaking on Channels Television, Jamiu faulted Babangida’s recent admission in his book A Journey in Service that MKO Abiola won the election, decades after the poll was annulled.

He also questioned why Babangida, after Abacha’s death in 1998, failed to reach out to General Abdulsalami Abubakar his friend and fellow Niger State indigene who succeeded Abacha, to intervene in Abiola’s detention.

“If Abacha was truly the reason the election was annulled, why didn’t General Babangida reach out to Abdulsalami, his friend and kinsman from Niger State, and urge him to release my father or allow him access to proper medical care?” Jamiu asked.

He said there was no real attempt to save his father, who might have survived had he received medical treatment.

“The result Babangida announced in his book could have been made public when Abacha died. Instead, my father remained in prison and later died there. It was an opportunity wasted,” he said.
