Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, on Wednesday, April 23, officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major political shift in one of PDP’s long-held strongholds.

Over the years, several governors have made similar moves while still in office, crossing from the opposition PDP to the ruling APC.

Here are seven governors who switched from PDP to APC while still in office:

1. Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta State)

Oborevwori’s defection came as a surprise to many political observers. Delta has been a PDP-controlled state since 1999, making his move a significant development in Nigeria’s political landscape.

2. Dave Umahi (Ebonyi State)

Umahi joined the APC in November 2020 during his second term as governor. He accused the PDP of marginalising the Southeast and hailed the APC for its commitment to infrastructure development under then-President Buhari.

3. Ben Ayade (Cross River State)
Ayade dumped the PDP in May 2021, stating his decision was based on the need to align with the federal government to fast-track development in Cross River.

4. Bello Matawalle (Zamfara State)
Matawalle moved to the APC in June 2021 amidst political instability in Zamfara. The defection was seen as a strategy to consolidate his grip on power.

5. Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto State)
Tambuwal defected to APC ahead of the 2015 elections, returned to PDP in 2018, and was again linked to a fresh defection back to APC during his tenure, showcasing his strategic political flexibility.

6. Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto State)
Wamakko switched to APC in 2014 while in office. His defection was part of a broader wave that helped the APC clinch power in 2015.

7. Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara State)
Ahmed left PDP in 2014 alongside Bukola Saraki during the famous “political tsunami” in Kwara. Although he later rejoined PDP, his defection while in office played a pivotal role in reshaping the state’s political dynamics.
