Suspected criminals have set the Ilesa High Court 2 building in Osun State on fire, causing significant destruction.

The fire, which occurred overnight, led to the destruction of sensitive documents and exhibits, with the building largely razed. Governor Ademola Adeleke condemned the act, calling it an unjustifiable attack on the judiciary.

He ordered security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the incident and enhance security across all court buildings in the state.

According to the governor’s spokesman, Olawale Rasheed, the state fire service was promptly mobilised to the scene, but it was too late to salvage important records.

“Governor Ademola Adeleke has condemned the act, describing it as an unjustifiable attack on the judiciary. He called for a thorough investigation to be launched by the security agencies, including an enhancement of security across all court buildings in the state.”

Governor Adeleke has directed the state’s security forces to conduct a detailed probe and ensure that those responsible face justice.

Additionally, he instructed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to collaborate with the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure for the immediate rehabilitation of the burnt court building.

The governor stressed that such an attack posed a threat to democracy, as the judiciary plays a crucial role in upholding the democratic process.

This incident mirrors a similar attack on the same court facility in 2017 under the administration of former Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

The perpetrators of the 2017 attack were never publicly apprehended.
