Pope Francis has died at the age of 88, the Vatican confirmed on Monday, marking the end of a historic 12-year papacy that broke numerous traditions and brought sweeping reforms to the Roman Catholic Church.

In a video statement, Vatican officials said the pontiff passed away at 7:35 am (0535 GMT) following complications from double pneumonia. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, a senior Vatican official, announced the death via the Church’s official Telegram channel.

Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, became the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church in March 2013.

He was the first Latin American and the first Jesuit to hold the position, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI — a move that had not occurred in nearly 600 years.

Throughout his papacy, Francis was widely regarded as a progressive voice in the Church.

He championed causes such as climate action, social justice, interfaith dialogue, and outreach to marginalised communities.

He also initiated financial reforms and efforts to address sexual abuse scandals that had rocked the Church globally.

Despite his spiritual vigour and global influence, the Pope’s health had been a concern in recent years.

He underwent colon surgery in 2021 and suffered from mobility issues, often seen using a wheelchair or walking stick.

His health took a critical turn recently after being hospitalised for double pneumonia, which led to a steady decline over the past five weeks.

The Pope’s final public appearance was on Easter Sunday, when he briefly greeted a large crowd of Catholic faithful in St Peter’s Square during the open-air mass.

Vatican aides later revealed that he was visibly exhausted and had only insisted on appearing to “honour the Resurrection.”

World leaders and religious figures have begun pouring in tributes, hailing Pope Francis as a man of humility, courage, and compassion.

The Vatican is expected to release details of funeral arrangements in the coming hours, as the Catholic world enters a period of mourning.
