An unspecified number of villagers, including 2 soldiers have been reportedly killed in a fresh attack by Boko Haram terrorists in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Borno, a lawmaker said.
The attack by the terrorists took place in Yamtake community in the Gwoza Local Government Area, where residents were recently resettled after previous attacks by the terrorists group.
Security sources said that the terrorists first launched an attack on Yamtake military formation at about 11.15 pm on Thursday, April 17, before they moved into the community, killing residents and destroying property worth millions.
“We are waiting for the reinforcement team to return, but we learnt that two of our men and other civilians were affected. I advise we wait until they return,” a military source said.
A senator representing Borno South senatorial district in the Nigerian Senate, described the attack as unfortunate and devastating, especially as the affected residents have just been resettled into the community by the Borno State government.
“It is very sad that two soldiers paid the supreme price, while an unspecified number of innocent civilians were among the casualties. May their gentle souls rest in peace,” Senator Ali Ndume.
KOIKI Media cited a report last week that Nigerian authorities have released 2,163 former Boko Haram terrorists in nine years. At least 390 more insurgents were released on Thursday, increasing the figure to 2,553.
These thousands who have engaged in acts of terror have found a path, made by the government, through which they can escape prosecution.
