A stakeholders’ meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ojokoro LCDA, Lagos State, ended in chaos on Monday following allegations that Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, imposed a chairmanship candidate on the community.
The meeting, which began peacefully at 4:00 p.m. at 7 Ijaoye Street, was disrupted when angry members stormed the venue in protest, chanting slogans such as “Ole!”, “We can’t take it”, “Who knows Sanusi?”, “Obasa can’t control us from Agege,” and “We won’t allow a stranger rule us here.”
The protesters accused Obasa of attempting to install a candidate from Agege, someone they claim has no connection to Ojokoro.
One of the protest leaders, Mr Olusegun Akinoso-Olawaye, condemned the move, stating, “We are here to reject imposition. All aspirants deserve a fair contest to prove their political relevance.”
He insisted that any candidate for the chairmanship must be a resident of Ojokoro, have served the party faithfully, and be active in local politics.
“There are at least 18 aspirants from this area, all with visible support. Bringing in an outsider with no electoral history here will backfire,” he warned.
Mrs Bola Ojetayo, another protester, decried what she described as a pattern of party leaders placing personal interests above the people’s will.
“We must not sell our seat to outsiders. A stranger cannot come and lead us in our own home,” she said.
“Leaders can’t sit elsewhere and decide for us. Someone in Agege shouldn’t determine Ojokoro’s leadership.”

It is a very nice one. It has come to a time that everyone has to know that those who are the leaders are of the same rights as those who are without portfolio in the constituency. A leader of the people must come from the people. Such a leader might have been tested and trusted by his people that want him or her to be their leader. The action came to play is an aberration to the principle of representative democracy. The residents of Ojokoro LCDA have done what is expected of them as far as representative government is connected.
