Following a confrontation with police, the gunman received treatment for non-life-threatening wounds but is now charged with capital murder.

WASHINGTON – A mass shooting occurred on Friday morning inside a grocery store in the southern US state of Arkansas, wounding at least 11 individuals, three of whom died as a result of their wounds.

The gunman, Travis Eugene Posey, 44, of New Edinburg, Arkansas, was taken into custody. Posey was brought into jail and charged with three counts of capital murder after receiving treatment at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries he acquired during a shootout with the police.

Authorities said that after responding to the incident at the Mad Butcher grocery shop in the city of Fordyce, Arkansas State Police got into a gunfire with the lone suspect.

The eight civilians who were wounded sustained injuries ranging from non-life-threatening to extremely critical, said Mike Hagar, head of the Arkansas Department of Public Safety.

“The situation is secure and contained. There are no active threats to the community,” Hagar said during a briefing.

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said she had been briefed “on the tragic shooting” and is in “constant contact” with police.

“I appreciate the swift and brave actions taken by law enforcement and first responders to preserve lives. She remarked on X, “My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and everyone affected by this terrible occurrence.

In addition to hundreds of gun-related incidents at public spaces and schools, the US has experienced a number of store shootings in recent years, including one in 2019 at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, which resulted in the deaths of 23 people.
