A security guard identified as Ebube Igboke has died after being beaten by his colleagues at Ebonyi State University’s (EBSU) Permanent Site in Ezzamgbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area.

Igboke, a native of Ezzama in Ezza South Local Government Area, was a member of the Middle Pillar Security outfit, which was hired by the university for security services.

Confirming the incident, Ebonyi State Police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu said three suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing.

“They said they caught someone stealing at EBSU’s permanent site. The people who caught him may have taken the law into their own hands and beaten the person.

“Though he didn’t die immediately, it later occurred to them that it was time to take him to the police station. However, the police advised them to take the person to the hospital for medical treatment.

“So, I think it was at the hospital that it was confirmed the person had died. We arrested the three individuals who brought the person to the police,” Ukandu said.

The deceased’s family has petitioned the state Commissioner of Police, Adaku Uche-Anya, demanding justice.

In the petition, signed by their lawyer, D. I. Njoku, the family alleged that Igboke was brutally beaten to death before his body was taken to the police headquarters.

They also claimed that his fiancée, Oluomachi, who is also a member of the Middle Pillar Security outfit, was prevented from taking him to the hospital after the attack.

The family has urged the authorities to ensure that those responsible for the killing are brought to justice.
