An explosion has ruptured a section of the Trans-Niger Pipeline (TNP) in Bodo community, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The incident, which occurred late Monday night, caused a fire that spread through the area.
A video shared online showed thick black smoke and flames engulfing the surrounding mangrove forest.
An eyewitness reported that the explosion happened near the Bodo-Bonny road, which is currently under construction.
The TNP is a key federal oil transport pipeline that supplies crude oil to the Bonny export terminal in Rivers State.
Concerns have been raised over the possible environmental impact and disruption of oil supply following the explosion.
When contacted, Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, said, “I will provide an update after making inquiries.”
This incident comes amid political tension in Rivers State. On Monday, lawmakers loyal to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), began impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Some Ijaw groups had warned that “any attempt to impeach Fubara may destabilise the oil-rich Niger Delta region.”
