LAGOS – Homes and businesses across Nigeria’s Lagos State and other major cities were plunged into darkness following a power grid failure, in a second setback recorded in the year 2025.

The latest collapse occurred at 11:34 am on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company announced in a short statement.

“Dear Esteemed Customer, Please be informed that we experienced a system outage today 12th February, 2025 at 11:34hrs affecting all our feeders.

“Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders,” the company said.

A post on Nigeria National Grid’s social platform X handle also said: “There was a “GRID DISTURBANCE” before noon today. Parts of the country experienced outages. Further information shortly.”

This setback follows a pattern of instability, with the grid suffering about 12 consecutive collapses in 2024.

Nigeria’s electricity sector continues to grapple with the recurring challenges of an unstable national grid, frequently resulting in widespread blackouts.

In November 2013, the federal government privatized power generation and the 11 distribution companies while retaining ownership of the transmission company to boost efficiency in the sector.

However, grid failures have persisted, sparking calls for further reforms.

Despite being Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria struggles to generate even 5,000 MW of electricity, leaving millions of citizens in prolonged darkness, with some stakeholders advocating for the privatization of the grid system and the introduction of state-level power transmission to alleviate pressure on the national grid and enhance stability.
