55-Year-Old Voter Stranded as BVAS Fails Facial Verification in Osun

A 55-year-old voter, Sharafa Lasisi, has appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for urgent intervention after the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) repeatedly failed to recognise his face during the ongoing Osun State governorship election.

Lasisi encountered the problem while attempting to vote at Polling Unit 006, Ward 04, in the Isale/Oke-Afo area of Ikirun, Ifelodun Local Government Area, on Saturday.

According to the voter, he made several attempts to complete the facial verification process on the BVAS device but was unsuccessful.

Election officials reportedly told him that the problem might have been caused by network difficulties and advised him to leave the polling unit and return later.

Lasisi said he followed the instruction and returned after some time, but the verification problem persisted.

He appealed to INEC officials to resolve the issue quickly so that he could exercise his constitutional right to vote.

He stressed that he had made the effort to return to the polling unit as instructed and was concerned that the technical problem could prevent him from participating in the election.

He therefore urged the electoral authorities to ensure that eligible voters facing similar difficulties are assisted promptly.

The incident occurred as voters across Osun State turned out in large numbers to participate in the governorship election.

The difficulty also highlights the technical challenges that can arise during biometric voter accreditation, with election officials working to address reported problems at some polling units across the state.
