Three police officers in Rochester, New York, were shot late Friday night “without warning and at close range” while responding to a domestic disturbance call at a residence, police said.

According to the Rochester Police Department, emergency dispatchers received a call from a man who reported that his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend was trying to break into her home and may have been armed. The caller also told dispatchers that he legally owned a firearm and was carrying a pistol.

Police said officers arrived shortly afterward and found the suspect — identified by the caller as the ex-boyfriend — along the side of the house.
“He immediately pulled out a handgun and fired several shots at close range toward the officers and the victim, hitting two officers,” Rochester Police Chief David Smith said at a news conference on Saturday morning.

Smith said more shots were fired, including a gunfight between the suspect and the man who had called police, during which the caller was shot multiple times.

The suspect then fled the scene but was found within minutes by another officer, who was also shot after the suspect opened fire.

Police said the officer and others at the scene returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times and killing him.
One officer was shot several times in the upper body and is in stable condition.

Another was wounded in the upper body, taken to surgery, and is listed as critical but stable.
A third officer sustained serious injuries but is also in stable condition, authorities said.

The man who initially called police was shot multiple times and remains in serious but non-life-threatening condition. Authorities have not released the identities of those involved, and the investigation is ongoing.
