2027: Obi Tells Tinubu To Retire, Says President Is ‘Tired’

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to step aside before the 2027 general election, saying the country needs a more capable and energetic leader to address its worsening economic and security challenges.

Obi made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he criticised the Tinubu administration’s handling of the nation’s challenges, arguing that the president no longer has the capacity required to lead Nigeria effectively.

The former Anambra State governor said Tinubu’s current performance as president falls short of the leadership he demonstrated while serving as governor of Lagos State.

According to him, the Tinubu who governed Lagos is different from the one currently occupying the nation’s highest office.

“The Bola Tinubu that was governor is not the one that is president today. He’s tired. He should be allowed to retire in peace and then go home,” Obi said.

He further claimed that Nigeria was moving in the wrong direction under the present administration, insisting that a change in leadership had become necessary.

“As it is right now, Bola Tinubu is leading us nowhere. We will turn it so he can see it. That’s why maybe I’m calling for his retirement. The man should just step aside. Yes, he doesn’t have the capacity to do the job,” he added.

Obi also urged Nigerians to focus on pressing national issues rather than political calculations, highlighting poverty, hunger, education and insecurity as areas requiring urgent attention.

He referenced recent global projections indicating that nearly 79 per cent of Nigerians could fall below the poverty line, while millions more risk facing food insecurity if current conditions persist.

Reacting to remarks by United States President Donald Trump commending Tinubu’s efforts to tackle insecurity, Obi welcomed the recognition but maintained that the government’s response had not gone far enough.

“Thank you to Donald Trump. Thank you to President Trump. But we need to do more, far more than what we are doing,” he said.

Obi argued that while some observers, including Trump, believed Tinubu had done his best, the country’s security and economic realities showed that greater action was needed.

“I’ve heard people, and Donald Trump is now confirming it, say he has done his best. But with the crisis we are facing, his best is not enough. We need to do more,” he said.
