The All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 a non-negotiable objective, while promising to ensure peaceful and secure campaigns across the country.
The ruling party restated its position on Sunday in Abuja during the inauguration of the national and sub-national structures of the Directorate of Security and Intelligence of the APC Presidential Campaign Council.
The APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, was represented at the event by the party’s Deputy National Secretary, Professor Abdulkarim Abubakar Kana (SAN).
Kana said the security directorate had made significant progress in establishing its structures, adding that political organisations could learn valuable lessons from the military’s discipline, coordination and organisational approach.
He stressed that effective planning and proper security arrangements would be essential to the party’s campaign activities ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
According to him, members of the directorate must ensure that campaign venues are assessed and secured before the arrival of party leaders and supporters.
He added that adequate protection must be maintained throughout campaign events, while access roads and exit routes must remain safe after the departure of the party’s officials.
Kana also recalled that the APC assumed power in 2015 under challenging national circumstances, expressing confidence in the party’s preparations for the forthcoming elections.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Minister of Defence and First Secretary of the directorate, General Christopher Musa, said the party was confident that Tinubu would return for a second term.
Musa maintained that the immediate responsibility of the security team was to establish the conditions necessary for peaceful campaigns and a secure electoral process.
He described security as a critical component of the party’s preparations, urging members to work towards protecting lives and property throughout the campaign period.
The defence minister also emphasised the need to prevent violence and ensure that political activities were conducted without threatening the safety of Nigerians.
Meanwhile, the Director of Intelligence and Security of the Presidential Campaign Council, Major General Sarkin Yaki Bello (retd.), charged members of the directorate to operate within the law.
Bello, who inaugurated the structures, said their responsibilities included protecting the President and members of the public without resorting to intimidation or creating unnecessary fear.
“Our duty is to protect Mr President and the people, and not to threaten them; to preserve order, not to create fear, and to support a peaceful democratic process,” he said.
He identified Tinubu’s re-election as the principal objective of the directorate, urging its members to remain focused on their responsibilities while respecting the country’s democratic process.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the President on Homeland Security, Major General Adeyinka A. Famadewa (retd.), said effective security arrangements were necessary to prevent disorder and ensure the smooth conduct of campaign activities.
He warned that inadequate security could lead to chaos, stressing that the directorate must prioritise the safety of participants and the general public.
The former Chief of Defence Staff and Chairman of Operations and Field Coordination of the directorate, General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin (retd.), disclosed that preparations would begin immediately, with campaign activities expected to cover all 36 states.
Olonisakin said the team was expected to commence field operations ahead of the campaign flag-off, adding that members must be prepared to carry out their assignments effectively.
Speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated officers, the South-West coordinator of the directorate, Lieutenant General Lamidi Adeosun (retd.), pledged that the officers would approach their responsibilities with professionalism and accountability.
Adeosun said their appointments required them to demonstrate commitment, deliver measurable results and remain accountable for their actions.
The inauguration forms part of the APC’s preparations for the 2027 general elections, as the party moves to strengthen its campaign structures and establish security arrangements ahead of the contest.
The party has reiterated its determination to secure Tinubu’s re-election while promising that its campaign activities will be conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law.
