The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man identified as Seth following the alleged killing of his father in the Pipeline area of Rumukwurushi, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
The incident reportedly occurred while the suspect’s mother, a teacher, was away at work.
A neighbour said the woman returned home and found the house in disarray before discovering her husband lying inside the building.
She initially reportedly believed her husband was asleep but became suspicious after observing the condition of the house.
She subsequently called for assistance from neighbours and members of a local vigilante group, who allegedly discovered that the man had died.
The suspect was reportedly found inside the room where his father’s body was located.
According to the account, he had allegedly locked himself inside, forcing vigilantes and police officers to gain entry.
The 20-year-old was allegedly found with bloodstains on his hands and reportedly admitted responsibility for attacking his father.
He was accused of using a machete during the attack, leaving the deceased with multiple injuries, including wounds around the neck.
Residents said the deceased had previously confronted his son over his alleged consumption of “Ice,” which was described in the report as a strong alcoholic drink.
The issue was reportedly a source of disagreement between the father and son.
However, police have not established that the alleged consumption of “Ice” directly caused the attack or that the suspect took the substance specifically before killing his father.
The exact circumstances and motive behind the alleged killing remain unclear.
The incident has generated concern within the community, while a video reportedly circulating online shows the victim’s wife recounting the incident to individuals believed to be members of the local vigilante group.
Confirming the arrest, Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, SP Blessing Agabe, said the suspect was in custody and that detectives had commenced an investigation.
The police said the investigation would focus on establishing what happened before the alleged attack, the motive behind the incident and the circumstances that resulted in the death of the victim.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue, while authorities are expected to determine the appropriate legal action after completing their inquiries.
